Tesco Lotus 'No bags' stores
No Plastic Bags


Tesco Lotus recently opened two “No Bag Stores” in Koh Samui and in Phuket. Plastic bags are no longer available from these stores, but reusable bags can be bought.

This is a trial project and other Tesco Lotus stores will probably follow, later on.

Will there be an airport on Koh Phangan?
Airport on Phangan?!


Just a few months ago there were rumors that the plans to build an airport in Koh Phangan were canceled.

But now, new rumors are suggesting that privately owned Kan Air are preparing to buy four Bombardier Q400 turboprop aircrafts in order to launch commercial flights from Bangkok to the island. Kan Air officials have also stated that the construction of the airport currently is 40% percent complete, and that it will be opened in mid 2014!

PM Dissolves House


Thailand's Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra today announced the dissolution of the House of Representatives. This after a massive turnout of (peaceful) anti-government protesters on the streets of Bangkok. Between 150,000-200,000 protestors, led by Suthep Thaugsuban (see picture), had gathered nearby the Democracy Monument.

Is the current turmoil in Bangkok affecting Southern Thailand, including Samui, Phangan and Tao?

It is obviously affecting the local population's minds and thoughts, but as a visitor you will probably NOT even notice anything at all in Samui or on any other island in Thailand. The turmoil is currently only focused to certain areas in the capital. ALL airports (including Suvarnabhumi) are open and operating as normal.

Stu Kyffin at the hospital

Stu Kyffin, a British SAS Veteran, was seriously hurt in a motorbike accident in Koh Samui at October 4th. Now his family is raising funds for the treatment and hopefully also a future medical evacuation back to The UK.

Supreme Patriarch Dies
Supreme Patriarch Dies


Thailand's Supreme Patriarch, Somdet Phra Nyanasamvara, the head leader of all Buddhist monks in Thailand, died today. He was 100 years of age. He died at Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital in Bangkok, where he had been treated since 2002.

Obviously, he was greatly respected by the Thai people.

No flooding in Koh Samui
No Floods in Samui


We have received several questions by email and on Facebook, whether there are current flooding in Samui, or not. The answer is no! Fortunately, there are no current flooding in Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao or in southern Thailand for that matter.

However, there are current floods in several provinces north of Bangkok.

Party turns 25
Full Moon Party Turns 25


The famous (and for some people infamous) Full Moon Party just turned 25 years this year. It started at Had Rin Beach in Koh Phangan with just a portable cassette player and a few people, but grew to became one of the most famous beach parties in the entire world. Happy Birthday BUT please do not grow any bigger (just a personal opinion!)

Courts for tourists in Samui
Tourist Courts in Samui?


In an effort to protect foreigners visiting Thailand, a tourist court has been opened in the tourist resort of Pattaya. The court will be open between 4:30 pm until 8:30 pm, covering matters such as scams and personal security.

Similar night-opened courts are planned to be implemented later in other tourist destinations, such as Bangkok, Phuket, Krabi, Chiang Mai and Koh Samui.

Samui - Laughing gas crackdown
Ban of Balloons


The authorities and the Bangkok police have made a crackdown on vendors selling balloons with "laughing gas" or nitrous oxide.

These have become rather common in Koh Phangan (at the Full Moon Party) and Koh Samui, as well.

Those arrested face up to five years in prison, or / and a fine for providing medications without authorization.

Nice Beach Restaurant


We would to recommend Krua Chao Baan, an excellent and cheap beach restaurant on the east coast of the island. It's a genuine Thai restaurant that is popular among the locals. The prices are really low compared to the food quality. They have very tasty curries ("gaeng") and seafood dishes.

Higher occupancy i Samui hotels
75 % Hotel Occupancy


According to C9 Hotelworks, the hotel occupancy in Koh Samui have risen to 75% for the first mid-year, 2013. The numbers for the same period 2011 was just under 60%, so it is a pretty remarkable increase. Our guess is that MANY hotels will be fully booked the coming high season.

Samui - A low carbon destination?
Low Carbon Destination?


The chairman of the Koh Samui Tourism Promotion Association, Thanongsak Somwong, have warned that the rapid growth of Samui is causing the island to face energy shortages.

The island intends to be a low-carbon tourist destination in a few years, by resolving its environmental problems and reducing the total energy consumption.

50% Wears a Helmet


More people are wearing a motorcycle helmet while driving in Samui. Both locals and tourists.

Today Kohsamui.org counted 500 motorcyclists and 48% of these were wearing a helmet 52% did not use a helmet.

The number of helmet users have increased a lot the last decade. Ten years ago only (about) 10% were using them.

Survives 9 hours in the sea
Survives 9 Hours in Sea


In the early hours of August 7, a German man known as Saschi, accidentally fell of a night ferry from Chumphon to Koh Tao. It was dark, but he managed to swim with the waves, all night.

At about 10 am, he saw a fishing boat and he managed to get the captains' attention by waving his T-shirt. He was finally rescued. Exhausted but well.

HM Queen Turns 81


HM Queen Sirikit of Thailand turns 81 on Monday, August 12th. Queen Sirikit and the King were recently released from a Bangkok hospital after a long treatment. They are now residing in Hua Hin.

Caught with ice
Caught with 12 Kg's of Ice


Two Indian men, 41 and 51-year-old, have been arrested at Samui Airport. They were accused and charged of trafficking 12,3 kilos of "ice" (crystal methamphetamine or "yaba" in Thai language) worth more than 40 million baht.

The suspects were detained at Samui Airport after arriving from Chennai in southern India, via Singapore.

Breaking News
Kills Police in Chaweng


This morning, a crazed 35-year old local man started to attack people at the PTT gas station in Chaweng. When the police arrived and fired warning shots, the man was able to grab one of the guns from the police and he killed the officer with it, execution-style! The other officer got stabbed, but survived.

The killer managed to flee the scene, but was soon arrested at his house and taken to custody.

Phangan declared drought zone
Declared Drought Zone


The governor of Surat Thani, Chartpong Chartphuti, has declared Koh Phangan a drought-stricken zone. A two-month shortage of rainfall has caused a water supply emergency.

A fund has now been set aside to provide water supply as initial relief.

Makeover of a luxury resort

Anantara Bophut Resort is undergoing a 170 million baht renovation. Key elements of the makeover includes an upgrade of the rooms, the lobby, the hotel library, the High Tide Restaurant and the Eclipse Bar.

The luxury hotel will not accept reservations until November 15, when the renovation is expected to be finished.

There have been a number of short power outages (30 minutes up to an hour) on the island recently.

The latest blackout, affecting many (but not all) households, occurred this night, at 3 am.

Accident in Samui
Two Brits Dies in Traffic


Two English tourists, 68 years and 69 years old, were killed on Saturday when a truck went off the road and struck both of them as they were walking. They are said to have been killed instantly.

Englishman Roger David James Whitting was involved in serious motorbike accident on the island, February 4, 2013. He needs a spinal operation and urgent repatriation to England.

A new power plant
New Power Station


A new power station was inaugurated today on the Samui Island. This is connected to the mainland via a submarine cable linked to a larger plant in the Kanom district.

The newly inaugurated plant will supply electricity to both Koh Samui and it's sister island, Koh Phangan.
