Power back in Samui

HURRAY! HURRAY!

The power outage is over on Samui, at least for now. The electric came on at about 4:20 this morning.

Many inhabitants and tourists have had to sleep without fans or air conditioning for three nights and a lot of food has been damaged, because of non-working refrigerators and freezers.

The Thai King - 85 Years
Thai King's 85th Birthday

Today HM The King, Bhumibol Adulyadej, is celebrating his 85th birthday. Kohsamui.org wish him a very Happy Birthday and a long and happy life!

In his birthday speech the King stressed good morals in the Thai people. He also said: "I hope that our country, no matter the current situation, will continue to prevail!"

The crowd that cheered him at the Royal Plaza was just huge.

Electric blackout in Samui

Most of Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao have had no electricity today. There has been a power outage for many, many hours. Many hotels have to use their generators to provide power for their customers.

Hospital Accreditation

Line

Bangkok Samui Hospital, situated in the Chaweng area of Samui, has been accredited with a JCI stamp of approval.

JCI, Joint Commission International, is a USA-based organization. The accreditation indicates that the hospital provide international medical standards and quality.

Cabinet Meeting on Samui

The next mobile cabinet meeting will be held at Koh Samui. It is the 7th of its kind under the Yingluck (Pheu Thai Party) administration.

The cabinet meeting is scheduled for October 21-22 and it will be held at the International School of Tourism, in the Chaweng / Bo Phut area. The school is a part of the Surat Thani Rajabhat University.

"Million Baht Babes" is a new TV-reality series starring three western girls; Rachel Webb (England), Sammy Kirk (Australia) and Michaela Michl (Germany). They are training Thai boxing at Lamai Muay Thai Camp and Lamai Fitness Gym.

Finally they will fight for one million baht in prize money (about $30,000 US).

Huge Shopping Mall in Chaweng
Central to Open in Chaweng?

According to rumors among locals in Samui, Central are to open a big shopping mall on a huge piece of land next to central Chaweng beach road. Many smaller restaurants, shops and bars have already been demolished in the area.

As we have not yet got an official statement from the owners, we will still consider this as a rumor until it is officially confirmed.

The Samui International Jazz Music Festival will be held again on October 14-20, 2012.

The main stage is situated at Amari Palm Reef Resort in Northern Chaweng. The other locations are: Rocky's Boutique Resort, The Library, Noraburi Resort & Spa and Anantara Bophut Resort & Spa.

This Sunday, on September 23rd, the prestigious Samui Island Marathon will be held again on the island.

There are six categories: From a two kilometer 'Fun Run' to a full 42.195 kilometer marathon. We wish all the runners the best of luck on Sunday!

After a ten-month closure, for a $35 million re-development (!), Samui Baan Taling Ngam Resort is to reopen again. The present owner is the InterContinental chain.

The hotel was Koh Samui’s first luxury resort when it first opened in 1993 and it's located on the west coast of the island, at Taling Ngam Beach.

Koh Samui is getting short of electricity, partly because of all the hotels on the island. According to Samui Island Regional Electricity Authority, the island is currently using 105 megawatts, while normal capacity is 90 megawatts.

Couple wins Samui Triathlon

David Dellow from Australia and his girlfriend Caroline Steffen from New Zealand won the men's and women's titles of the Samui Triathlon. Together, they received 1,3 million baht in price money because of their outstanding performance.

The competition included more than 200 competitors from 22 countries, including some of the world's top ranked triathletes.

Second Airport in Samui?

There have been discussions about building another airport on the island. Piyasvasti Amranand, the President of Thai Airways International, supports the Transport Ministry's policy for a possible second airport on the island.

However, it is not easy to find a suitable location, as the island is rather developed already.
