A Blog about the Daily Life on the Tropical Island of Koh Samui

Samui Panorama

Text and Photography by Nike - Saturday, July 23, 2011

Another day in beautiful Koh Samui. I live in a very quiet part of the island in a small fisherman's village. Even though the island is not very big, and one would imagine that finding constructive things to occupy your time with, would eventually run scarce, I find that sometimes weeks go by without me having traveled further than roughly 10km's from the house, simply making short trips to buy food and supplies, absolutely content with my quiet surroundings and local area, busied in everyday happenings in my small paradise absoluteness. The days and nights, hours and weeks all seem to go by so fast, every single day I am busy, every night I am tired, and as soon as I open my eyes, the next one follows. I avoid visits to Chaweng or other busy areas on Samui. The small island has become my home, and the 'holiday' feeling has long since evaporated. To me it feels like traveling to the other side of the island resembles the tedious task of a two hour train journey into town or commuting from the country side to the big city. However, when I do decide to make the 'long' journey from Huathanon to Chaweng, I like to stop by the Lad Koh Viewpoint on the way there or back. This is situated on the Koh Samui Ring Road (4169), before the Elephant rock if you are driving from Chaweng towards Lamai.

The viewpoint

Lad Koh, also known as the Zenith Viewpoint, is the perfect place to stop and enjoy the breathtaking views of the bay. From here you can see all along the Chaweng shore. There are a few benches to sit and relax on and after some renovations a few years ago, there is sufficient parking space too. You can walk along the path that snakes down to where the water meets the rocks below. It is the perfect spot to take photos and at night you can see all the little lights from the hustle and bustle of Chaweng. If you are lucky you can even enjoy a firework show which is a very regular occurrence on Samui. Fireworks are set off almost every night all around the island at different locations on beaches. To the side of the viewpoint you will see a shrine that was erected in remembrance of all the lives lost on the Ring Road. You will also notice that many cars and motorbikes honk when they pass this shrine to pay their respects to lost loved ones. I enjoy Lad Koh's panoramic views of our paradise island. Well worth a look.
