A Blog about the Daily Life on the Tropical Island of Koh Samui

Lazy Beach Day

Text and Photography by Nike - Wednesday, June 22, 2011

I recently came to realize that since arriving on Koh Samui, I hardly ever spend much time on the beaches, let alone go for a swim, even though I have the ocean as my front yard. This faux pas had to be tended to immediately, and so I set off for a day of sun, sand and isolated bliss.

Being a bit of an introvert and a hopeless romantic for Utopian, smooth, white beaches with tropical backgrounds and clear water, I prefer to take a drive out on the 4170 road,a right turn just after Huathanon, towards the south of Samui, where you can find exactly this. Isolated, untouched, non commercialized, tropical beach felicity. I have to mention that this road - although almost free of traffic, is decorated with potholes and camouflaged indents of sunken tarmac. Best to drive slowly and carefully. There's enough picturesque scenery to soak up and plenty of photographic opportunities not to be missed.

A day for relaxation

"Look within. Be still. Free from fear and attachment, Know the sweet joy of living in the way." - Buddhist quotation

On this same road you can find the Samui Dog Rescue Centre and the Snake farm. You will find lovely little coves and beaches scattered along the way, plenty of Thai Food restaurants right on the beach and acres of pellucid jungle and coconut trees. It is the perfect day trip if you feel like you have had enough of the hustle and bustle of the town centre, shops and tourists. Simply drive until you find a nice and quiet beach - there are many - clear your mind of all stress- related thoughts, and simply bask in the beauty of your surroundings.

Calm beach in Samui

"The miracle is not to walk on water. The miracle is to walk on the green earth, dwelling deeply in the present moment and feeling truly alive." - Thich Nhat Hanh

I spent a peaceful day of swimming, catching up on tanning, and generally being lazy. Finally- a day at the beach! It is so easy to forget that you live on an island, seeing that here on Samui, we have access to all the luxuries of back home. It is really worth it to spend a day rediscovering the reality of being abundantly blessed living the "island life". When I wade out into the ocean and stare back at the island, I instantly commemorate the awe I felt the first time I set foot on Koh Samui, and my love for it.
