Merry Christmas

Text by Olle - Living on Lamai Beach - Friday, December 24, 2010

Today it is Christmas eve a day I usually celebrate with my family. This is one of the big downsides of living far away from my family.

In the morning I went to do the last bit of shopping which included a new mobile to Nui. She has had hers for I do not know how many years. I had a hard time finding the phone I had planned but found the last one on Big C. There was a lot of traffic, not least in Chaweng, and the Thais who have no tradition in celebrating Christmas has picked up the tradition a little bit. Some more some less. In the afternoon Khun went to sing songs with his school class at some hotels and he should not be home until after 9 in the evening. Nui and I went to buy him a bike and then we went to eat in Chaweng. I do not care about Christmas food and none of us want to eat meat which a lot of the food on the Chistmas table are made of.

When Khun got back home celebrated a little christmas together and we talked with my family through skype so Nui and Khun could see the decorations and the Christmas tree as well as all the snow. Ming, a dog born on Samui that I rescued are now staying with them since two years back and she seem to enjoy the snow.

And Back Again

Text by Olle - Living on Lamai Beach - Thursday, December 23, 2010

The trip went great even better than I ever expected. Both Nui and I have felt that Samui sometimes is to small there for we have been thinking about moving back to Phuket. We like the laid back feeling here but as a year round place to live in it sometimes gets a little small. We actually had everything set, however one big problem came to us today. The house we should have is owned by muslims and when we called them today they said that we cannot have any dogs around the house. Sad they had no manners to tell us right away but waited for us to call them to ask a small thing, what if we had not called, everything was already set. People here just never stops surprise me with their stupidity, it is sad to say but that is the fact. I hope we will find a good house anyway but we might have to start out in a house we really do not like. This step back ruin the plan totally.

If we move we will for sure miss some things from Samui but putting everything together the upsides on Phuket wins, at least for now if we find a good house. We have to get back to the thinking again, a good house is extremely important for us.

Today the weather has been terrible. It has been raining for almost 18 hours now and driving in Lamai take ages because parts of the roads are flooded and everybody have to drive up to the road by the mountain and then down to the main road again avoiding the flooded section and these small mountain roads are not really fitted for hundreds of cars at the same time. Tomorrow it is Christmas and we have to do some more shopping but shopping on Christmas does not feel as bad here as it would do in Sweden so that does not matter at all.

Going Away

Text by Olle - Living on Lamai Beach - Monday, December 20, 2010

We got a cloudy and rainy weekend. Yesterday it was only cloudy but on Saturday it was raining a lot most of the day and today again we had sun. Yesterday I went to buy a new mobile phone, my went out of business. It kept acting as someone was pressing the number one button which made it impossible to enter any functions. I never really liked that phone but I did not care that much either but now I had to get a new one, so I got myself an unwanted christmas gift in advance. Khuns new telephone is also broken, he fell on it while playing and the display broke. Luckily he got an offer from a friends mom to buy a new one for a silly price even lower than repairing the other one. If he had stuck with the phone I suggested I would have repaired it and used that one but he really wanted that telephone. He soon realized it was a bad brand because it was slow and the overall quality was not very good.

Tomorrow we will take a drive to Phuket and stay only one night and then go back again. Not really looking forward to it but it is necessary so I more or less have no option. First we planned that I would go alone but this evening we changed the plan so Nui will go as well. With a gasoline price now up at 40 bath per liter driving is not really cheap at least not considering that most people do not earn the same as european people.

When I get back we will try to get a little bit of christmas spirit. The cashiers in some stores wear santa hats and christmas songs are playing through the speakers, it is just the snow missing and it would feel as it was christmas for real. It is not possible to get a real christmas feeling for me when it is not cold, dark and no sign of snow.

Now I need to fix a few things for tomorrow, we will head off just after 5 in the morning.
