Eating Durian

I started this day with a gym session, so much better to get it done in the morning not least for the results since I then have all day to eat compared to the late afternoon sessions. It is also nice to have it done so that I can focus on whatever I need to do during the day. In the afternoon it started to rain as it has been doing way to often lately. I guess we had been spoiled the last year with the minimum rainfall we have had. Anyway we often have good weather more than half the days so it is not that bad.

After I had picked up Khun at school I asked him, as I use to do, what they had been doing in school today. He told me they had four persons from England teaching English all day. I guess they were from England or but it might as well be some other English speaking country. Well, that sounded nice since their English skills are far beyond useful and I asked what he learned today. I did not get any answer because he had to think. I then asked what they have been doing all day and how they were teaching and Khun told me that the teachers had been speaking and writing at the board all day and I asked if they could speak Thai. The answer to that was of course no. -So did anyone understand what they were saying then, I asked, because if I say, -Hello children how are you today, I will only see a bunch of open mouths since this is far beyond their skill level.

Khun said they did not understand anything at all what they had been saying all day. I am quiet sure none of the teachers have any clue as well, I have been speaking to several of them before together with other friends and it was not very easy to have a conversation in English with them. I wonder if the English speaking teachers understand that what they are doing is a waste of time. Even if I cannot resist smiling and laughing a little bit when I speak with Khun about it I really think it is not that funny at all.

When Nui got back home she had bought a small durian fruit which we ate. I ate a little, I am not the found of Durian but this one was kind of okay. Nala really liked the taste of it and ended up eating a lot, a dog that eats durian, I could never guessed that.

No More Bangkok

Text by Olle - Living on Lamai Beach - Monday, August 09, 2010

Last Thursday we went away to Bangkok to get my new visa. First we planned on leaving on Wednesday but since we had good weather Nui wanted to work. Well in Bangkok everything went great, thanks for that. We had everything set in less than an hour. At the big immigration office it was a big market with clothes, food and gadgets where we strolled around for a few minutes just to kill some time. We then went to Nonthaburi and a new shopping mall where we spent some time before we went back home to Nui.

There is only one more thing that I have to do and that is to extend my visa so that it is valid for one year. To do this I have to provide the immigration with ALL the papers again which I see as completely idiotic since the visa I have now can only be obtained if all the papers are provided. I guess they just do not trust their own or something like that. Anyway this can be done at Samui.

Today Nui and I went to the hospital where our friend stays after the horrible accident about one and a half week earlier. While we were driving there I thought that she might not look that good, something that I had not been reflecting before. We know what room number she was staying in and knocked on the door and stepped in. Our friend was sitting with her back facing the door and her mother was staying with her as well. Both Nui and I was very chocked when she turned around and it was very sad to see her. Her eyes had almost no white areas but were completely filled with blood, her teeth we missing and she was very swollen in her face. Her mother said that most of the swelling had gone away already and that the first time she arrived here she had no chance to recognize her daughter. She also had a broken jaw, eye socket and one shoulder was located far below the normal position and a bone was sticking up many centimeters from the dislocated shoulder which just looked extremely nasty. She was right now waiting to go to the operation room to get the shoulder fixed. Her broken nose had already been fixed as well as the jaw that had plates inserted to keep it together. I do not know what we had expected really but damn we felt sorry for her. Hopefully she will be able to recover at home soon. Her younger brother who was also in the car survived but he cannot walk because he hit the back of his head. Maybe he will recover, maybe not.

The weather has been very on and off and today it started to rain in the afternoon and then kept raining on and off all day.
