Late Evening Rain

Text by Olle - Living on Lamai Beach - Friday, June 11, 2010

Rat

Today we had a pretty normal day. Nui was working and I got some things done as well. The weather was sunny almost all the day with some more clouds in the evening. After picking up Khun at school I went to the gym and Jessica came a long as well.

In the late evening we went to eat dinner and while sitting there the rain started to come down really hard. The water was covering the streets while we finished our meals. When we were done we could just sit and wait for the rain to stop which for the first time in a year took a while. The new record lasted for almost one hour. When we went home it was still raining a little bit and the water was already high on some parts of the road. Kind of unlucky timing since this was the first day for the temple market that will be here for a week. The last time they had the market it was also raining, strange since it has been raining very little in general.

We then went back home and saw that the clock was only 9 in the evening but did not think much about that. We started to see a movie but we all felt kind of tired. After a while we saw that the time was still 9 and we realized that the clock had stopped. The real time were close to midnight so we ended the movie which was not that good anyway and went for the last walk before I drove Jessica back to the hotel. On the way there we saw the biggest rat I have ever seen lying on the road. Not that I have seen many rats but this one had a body far bigger than my feet and it first looked like a small cat.

Tomorrow Nui and I will go to Bangkok and I hope we will have a nice weekend there.

Nice Dinner

Text by Olle - Living on Lamai Beach - Thursday, June 10, 2010

Today we have had a very nice day. We started out with eating an early lunch at Black Canyon which is really price worthy and then we sat at home just relaxing. In the evening after poking up Khun from school Jessica and I went to the gym. The weather was mostly cloudy which made the exercise more comfortable.

Since it was Jessica's birthday we wanted to eat something good for dinner but we did not know where to go. In the last minute we decided to head to Chaweng. We all jumped on our motorbike and took off. Not the best thing to go four people on one bike but so we did this time. There were less people in Chaweng so the low season was noticeable even though it was not at all empty. We ate Pizza and some Thai food and the food was OK, but not more than that. After we finished the dinner and had been sitting for a while slowly walked back to the bike and did a quick stop at Tesco in Chaweng before we went back to Lamai. I was happy that we did not got any rain this evening since the day was cloudy it would not be very strange with a few drops in the night.

We spent a few more hours on the porch before we decided it was time to get some sleep.

Got Company

Text by Olle - Living on Lamai Beach - Wednesday, June 09, 2010

This morning I went for the regular walk with Nala and Black. Nala really had to make the number two and had started to search fro her perfect spot. They both stopped at the same spot and Black decided to take a leak. However it really does not work the way he thinks. The pee is not reaching the same spot as he just sniffed but it goes sideways, right where Nala stands and I see that she got completely yellow over her throat. She started to sneeze and roll around to get it away but that was not that easy. Nothing else to do but to go home and clean her off. When that was done I went away again to let them finish what they had in mind the first walk.

In the late afternoon I went to the airport to pick up Jessica. She was planned to arrive at 17:35 but she called me just when I left 30 minutes easier and said that she was already here. I just cannot figure out how they could make it here so fast. It must be impossible to save 30 minutes on a such a short flight from Phuket and the plane was a propeller plane as well. Maybe warp wholes exists even on earth. The day had been cloudy from the morning but no dark clouds. The temperature was a few degrees lower than the earlier sunny days but in the afternoon it rises to 35 even with the cloudy sky and I was just hoping that it would not rain when I went to pick her up.

On the way back we felt a few drops of rain and hurried just in case. When we had just one big hill left to reach Lamai I was driving quiet fast when the rear of the bike started to wobble like crazy. Oh, another flat tire. Damn, why do they use these tires with rubber balloons inside. They blew way to often. I kept driving slow of the hill and on the way down the complete inside of the wheel popped out and we had to walk. Fortunately we reached a repair shop just a kilometer later. It showed that the last time we changed tyre the guy had used a 17 inch inside instead of 16 inch. If this had anything to do with the flat tyre or not I do not know. The guy who switched it the last time saw that the guy who switched tyre, or the inside, had made a mistake which caused the tyre to crack.

Close Call

Dangerous Road

Today Nui woke me up just before 7 o'clock in the morning. She came running into the bedroom and said she had been extremely close to an accident. She was going to drive Khun to the school and on the way there is an intersection with four very small roads and from where Nui came driving the rod to the left is completely covered by a wall. Recently they have made speed bumps on all four roads but the majority of the drivers here does not see the main reason for why the speed bumps are there but drives as fast as they can anyway. In the intersection Nui drove lowly across but when she is as far out as she need to be to see around the corner a mini van comes driving in very high speed and Nui made the decision to accelerate which was lucky because the van did not have a chance to brake. They passed in front of the car with only a few centimeters margin and the driver stopped the van and seemed not sure if he had hit them or not, that's as close it was. Nui could barely speak but managed to get a bunch of angry words out of her mouth while the driver just stared without saying anything. This intersection is close to the school and there are many many parents driving the kids to school at this place and some even drive themselves and even this time in the morning this idiot drives like this. I am not very surprised since so many people drive as if it is worth taking a chance where you might kill or injury someone to spare half a second when driving.

Every day I pass places where only one car can pass because of parked cars at one side of the road and even if it is a straight road and they see the motorbikes coming they take up the complete road forcing the bikes to go out in the bumpy gravel at the side. I think I have said it a hundred times but the traffic is something that I really have a hard time understanding.

A positive thing lately is that the house owner who also have the dog that before used to bite Black have started to correct his dog when getting close to our house. This is actually something that I see as big respect. However it is very rare that he bites since I have been correcting him and even inviting him into our yard when Black is here to let him know that I am in charge here and then after a while having him leave.

The weather has been really OK lately with some cloudy afternoons but almost no rain at all. During the days the sun is shining and it has been about 35 degrees.
