Tricks for Ticks

Text by Olle - Living on Lamai Beach - Friday, June 04, 2010

Yesterday before Nui went to work she told me that I didn't had to pick up Khun after school because they had a special day and he had probably already finished school. I worked all day and at about four in the afternoon Khun came home looking tired. He looked at me and asked why I did not come pick him up after school. He probably thought this was payback from the time I went to pick him up as we said I will do everyday but he was not there. It really was not, I would never be that mean even I could not help laughing seeing him all sweaty from the walk in 35 degrees. He could not help laughing too. I said Nui told me I did not have to so I free from guilt. Today I picked him up as usual.

This morning, well it was almost noon, I went for a short walk with Nala. She does not have any rush in the morning but like to sleep long. It is still very hot and today it was almost 36 degrees. When we got inside I started to check for ticks and this time I thought I count them all. I sat for good two hours and removed 154 ticks which is so much is it hard to understand. Most of them are very small some a little bigger but since we check her often she very rarely have big ones. After the darkness had fallen we went for a new walk, a very short one and then I checked her again. This time I picked 110 ticks which makes a total of 264 ticks in one day and I know I would find some more if I kept looking but we have to take those before bedtime. Now I plan on getting her shoes and spray them with poison. Then I guess we would eliminate most of them. The alternative is to try something like frontline which is a liquid substance that is applied in the neck. I have to do some reading to get into what it is, I kind of back off when reading that you have to watch your hand after touching your dog when using it. I have a hard time thinking that it is dangerous for humans but not for dogs. Something have to be done, that's no doubt about it. I feel sorry for Nala having to lay perfectly still while we check her from all possible angles for such long times.

Now it is Friday again and we will spend the evening watching Slumdog Millionaire which I have already seen but not the rest of the family. I wish you a nice weekend.

By the Computer

Text by Olle - Living on Lamai Beach - Wednesday, June 02, 2010

The last days have been very much alike. I spend most of the days by the computer and for some reason I have been timing the afternoon walks to the time when the mosquitoes are the worst. It amazing how they can sit down eating even when running as a maniac.

At half past three I went to pick up Khun at the school. We have said that I pick him up that time every day and if he has other plans he should give me a call. Today I saw no Khun at the school and I waited for 10 minutes before I went home again. Of course I left the telephone at home and when I got home I noticed that my sim card expired. Since I do not call very much I have loads of money in the phone but when only charging with smaller amounts it is only valid for a week or so. Anyway Khun came home from school a few hours later and as usual he do not have any money left on his phone card which is not hard to understand when speaking 4 hours in the phone during a 6 hour period is not any problem at all. Now the deal is that he call me when he wants me to come pick him up.

I just spoke to Jessica on the phone, she has been stuck on the countryside for over two weeks due to the problems in Bangkok. It sounded as if she was happy to be back in the south again. Many people in the area she visited was drinking from dawn to late night everyday and the only thing to do was to visit karaoke bars which might be tiring after a while. She will be here in about a week and take care of Nala and Khun while Nui and I go to Bangkok for a few days. It will be interesting to see how they handle the communication since Jessica only speaks very little Thai and Khun speaks almost no english. I am a little surprised how little english they learn in school since they start learning in first grade. I do not think it will be any problem of bad kind but rather funny.

The weather has been very good in the days, maybe a little too hot, with more clouds during late afternoon and yesterday we had a few minutes of rain in the night.

Clouds at the Beach

Today we have had a very nice monday. However I spent most of the time inside except for a few dog walks. Yesterday we went down to the beach in the late afternoon. While we were in the water we saw huge dark clouds building up over the mountains and slowly came closer to us. We did not care about that but stayed in the water. When the clouds were almost above us we went up but while we were about to go back home we saw that the cloud suddenly got thinner. We never got a drop on us but we later heard that it had been raining very locally on the beach for a short time.

At Saturday we went to eat a dinner in Chaweng at a small local restaurant we like. Unfortunately this restaurant was closed so we sat down right next to it. The place has about four small restaurants close to each other in a very simple way. I ordered deep fried chicken with extra fried french fries because i like them crunchy. Nui ordered Phad Thai and Khun another Thai dish.

After a while I got my chicken but it was only fried, not deep fried and since I eat chicken every day I was not very keen on eating it when going to a restaurant so we said that we wanted deep fried and she took it away to prepare it as I wanted. After a few minutes my french fries arrived. Pale and soft as over cocked spaghetti I had to take a deep breath before I said what I ordered. The thing is that 9 times of 10 I have to tell them again when they are about to serve me. It does not matter what you said in most cases. They took the french fries back and after a while again I had my deep fried chicken and french fries as I wanted.

Khun got his dish which appeared to be very over salted but he ate some anyway. Last Nui's Phad Thai was served and this was the biggest joke of them all. Under cocked noodles and the ONLY ingredient except the noodles and 3 lonely shrimps was a little chili sauce which tasted just as the one in the bottle on the table, no vegetables or seasoning what so ever. It really tasted like crap. Nui wondered how the heck they could call this Phad Thai and even serve it to a Thai. She had never seen anything like it before and it is really obvious how many people there are around here that just opens up whatever business they want without having the skill to perform the task. The bill for this was close to what it is on fancier restaurants where the food is good. I wanted to take a picture of the Phad Thai but Nui was to angry to care and we both were to tired to say anything to the family owners, we just paid and took off. If I had seen that a customer barely touched the food I would have asked what was wrong. Since we do not eat out very often it was very sad that we had to end up in such a lousy place.
