Ant Invasion Part Two: Death Strike

Text by Olle - Living on Lamai Beach - Wednesday, Mars 03, 2010

The last days without any ants have been wonderful. Yesterday we noticed that we in a few minutes had been attacked by thousands Fireants. They are small and really evil ants that also have army ants who are very big, probably hundred times bigger than the other ants. They are not here to eat as the other ants but these ones are here to conquer the house and to kill everything in its way. It might sound ridiculous but it is true. When these small bastards bite you it hurts as hell and I can only imagine how it would hurt to get bitten by one of those giant army ants. The ants are very fast and suddenly they are crawling up along your legs biting you as much as they can.

Nui made up a small fire using paper to get rid of the invaders and it worked. Soon after we took off to Tesco for the usual shopping and we bought both ant poison in powder form and as spray to prepare for the war. When we got back home and opened the door we got a chock, a new attack was in action. During the half hour we had been away the house had been attacked seriously. They had entered all the rooms but in the bedroom they were still mostly along the walls and Nala was in the bed. In the other parts of the house the ants were all over but they had trails that most of the ants were lined up in. We got bitten countless times while trying to sweep them away with a broomstick. At this time it was impossible to use the powder since they were everywhere so we had to use the spray to keep them away for a while. I have never seen so many ants in a house before in my entire life.

Today they have been mostly outside and I took a walk around the house to see how it looked in the back and I saw several holes in the ground with lots of ants on my way. These ones were the kind we used to have inside before. I put out some of the poison and stepped forward. When I reached the back of the house I was almost out of poison and on a dark spot on the ground, where I think someone had made a fire before, there were countless holes and ants all over, the fire ant kind and this is only a few decimeters away from the house. Just below our stair they had a big nest and I guess this family are really big. Today we have to buy more poison and get rid of these ones. Probably they got space to expand when we wiped out the other nest of red ants. Usually I do not like to kill animals but when it comes to all these ants I have learned a lesson that you cannot accept even a few because it only takes a few days and they are all over and it is not fun. I really hope we can rid of all the different nests around the house at least for a while.

Eating Ant Poison

Text by Olle - Living on Lamai Beach - Tuesday, Mars 02, 2010

Samui Firetruck

This weekend really made me sweat. As I told before we got rid of all our house ants which felt really good. We used a lot of ant poison and a big pile was still left just inside the backdoor where it had been for a few days. This day I thought that I better take it away and only an hour later Nala had eaten it all. She usually never ever eat strange things but I think this little pile had got a lot of smell from chicken and other things since it was placed close to the cocking place. I did not know about the substance and tried to find some info at the internet which did not help much, I could not find the right brand and guessing would not be an option. I went fast as a rocket to the closest pharmacy and bough a whole bunch of coal tablets and managed to get Nala to eat 30 of them along with liver candy and 3 raw eggs. She thought she was in paradise for a while. The coal absorbs poison and I was extremely angry because I did not listen to my self earlier. No symptoms were shown and the next day I went to check the package at the store and checked the substance. As I was hoping it contained a biological substance which has a calculated death dose if almost 30 grams per body weight in dogs. Nala ate a few hundred times less. Even after this eating frenzy she did not have any stomach problems at all and have not had for a few weeks.

Yesterday Nui was not doing very well. She had a sore throat and a little fever so she stayed in bed most of the day. In the morning however, we went for a shorter trip to the store and when we came outside our house two fire trucks were passing by and also an ambulance. We went the same way and ended up on a yard where some people had been burning the dry grass and some neighbor thought it was an uncontrolled fire.

The weather keep throwing sun at us all days long and we have not had any rain for I do not know how long and some days it is almost too hot but I am not complaining. Looking at the european weather this really is heaven.
