Got To Cold?

Text by Olle - Living on Lamai Beach - Wednesday, January 6, 2010

Corn and Coffe in Lamai

Today I have stayed in bed most of the day. The last weeks I have felt as if I was about to be ill but it never really happened, until yesterday, when I felt very tired and as I had a little fever. No big deal but short on power. It does not feel as a good timing to say that I might have got to cold. Even with chilly nights I think I might be on thin ice since it is a record cold winter in Europe. I heard that it had been close to -40 degrees celsius in northers Sweden and -20 degrees in Stockholm. Here it might have dropped to +25 some night. It hardest part is mentally and I just do not have the power to focus the way I usually do. I hope it will go away until tomorrow. Today I had time to catch up on the Ultimate Fighting Championship which I have not been following as much lately.

Today Nui had her first day at work since new year. The people had missed her and she did not have the time to go along the complete beach road because there were to many costumers and she ran out of both ice and water and the sun started to set. Today also was the first day that she also served corn, yummy.

Yesterday we were just about to start looking at a movie when the power went out, I think it was about 22 o'clock. In minutes it became very hot inside the house without the fan so we opened up the windows and just enjoyed a pitch black moment. I grabbed my iPod and 2 earplugs, then went looking for a special plug that has two connectors at it so that we could listen together. I just could not find it. Nui said never mind but I waited to find it and kept looking. It did not really got colder by searching for that one but after 10 minutes I had it in my hands. I plugged it in to the iPod and fixed the messy earplugs cables and then noticed that the iPod had been discharged, typical.

We thought we better take a ride and see what was going on at the main road, maybe something to drink or something. At the main road the power was gone as well only the 7-eleven stores and some hotels had their own power. We went in the direction of Chaweng and from far distant across the sea we saw that the lights and turned back. A few hundred meters on one side of the road had electric but then pitch black, even in the far southern part of Lamai. That must mean that the power lines are set up in a very strange way, I would really like to know how. Why does a part in the middle of an area with power failure have power. Even the light by the road was working, strange. On the way back the power suddenly came back. We headed back home and looked at the new movie Where The Wild Things Are. A children movie that was quiet entertaining.

First Monday of the Year

Samui View

Today is the first Monday of the year. After a slow and cozy weekend we started the week in the same way. Nui wanted to fix the sidecar so that she could serve corn instead of the burgers which she has not served for a long time. I went with her to the craftsman and I think that was good that I did. They first planned on replacing the removable frying pan with a non removable piece with a hole in the center for the saucepan and they said it was not possible to do a removable one. After I explained how I was thinking there were no problems making it that way and in the afternoon we went to bring the sidecar back home again. They did a great job and now it takes a few seconds to change between the plates and since it is removable it is also possible to reach the gas burner if needed. We then went to a company that make signs and ordered a new sign to replace the burger sign with. That will be done tomorrow, nice.

This weekend we have been watching a lot of movies, some very good some not that great. The ones we liked most were Lovely Bones, Law Abiding Citizen, The Hangover and The Time Travellers Wife. The Hangover was a great comedy which have me the same feeling as Boondock Saints from 1999 for some strange reason. Not that the plots are anything like each other but just a feeling.

It might sound as if we have not done anything but watching movies but that is not correct. We have been taking new mountain hikes but this time we went along the concrete roads instead of the bumpy dirt-roads. We went up from the ring road on the western side of Samui, a few minutes before the Na Muang falls and followed the road all the way to the Paradise Viewpoint Restaurant and then further. Amazing view over the western side of Samui and the flat lands but the air was very foggy which made the pictures bad. At this altitude the air feels very fresh and on the way down my new breaks got a good test which they luckily passed.
