Happy New Year

New Year at Samui

Yesterday was a wonderful day which ended in a perfect crescendo. Nui and I had long talking about eating a dinner at Chaweng beach so we thought it would be a great opportunity to do this at new years eve. Before we went to the beach we went to Big Buddha just to relax a short while. Since the sun was about to set there were not that many people at the temple area. We then went looking at some clothes along the main road in Chaweng. It felt just as we were on vacation.

When we came down to the beach we felt almost alone, most of the people we saw tried to sell fireworks and other things and we thought that this would be a very quiet place. Anyway we sat down in a nice and cozy restaurant right on the beach where we could lay down and talk while figuring out what to eat.

We decided to order one pasta fettuccine dish which shrimps, olive oil and chili one pizza with lobster and different kind of cheese and a Barracuda fillet. While we waited many people came by and tried to sell things, many of them children which we do not appreciate. We realized that the spot closest to the water was not the best one since we the few minutes we had had a large number of people trying to sell things. We decided to switch table to another one further up from the water. That was a great choice.

The food came in and while we enjoyed the very tasty dishes more and more people came by. I had planned to go to Lamai after our dinner but the closer to midnight we came the more people gathered and the atmosphere with the loud music and all the people around was awesome. Nui did not really like the idea to go to Lamai because she thought she might feel alone if I hooked up with my friends and since we booth enjoyed this place so much we decided to stay.

Right before midnight the place was just crazy with people all over the beach and we still had our great spot where we could lay down and just zip on a drink. At midnight tons of firework filled the sky and it was one of the most fireworks I have aver seen like this. For about 30 minutes they kept light up the sky without any pause. Most of the fireworks went off in the sky but some exploded right among the crowded beach. And at times it was raining paper and garbage from the exploding rockets above. It turned out to be just a great new years eve and we also met some nice people to chat with.

When we went home we really felt that we had got the most perfect new year that we could possible have.

Drag Show

Drag Queen

Yesterday we spent in Chaweng and I spent an hour on the beach, or in the water more or less. The weather was very windy and somewhat big waves were rolling in to the shore in a non harmonic way. No rhythm in between but just waves on waves. The current was also very strong dragged you north along the beach but it never felt dangerous because of the shallow water.

We ate lunch on a small place on the beach road but the food was very bad, even the rice was not well cooked. I asked if the sweet and sour sauce had pineapple in it which they said it had, and it was true. I managed to find one small piece of pineapple hidden under the rice. That the charm with eating in new places, you never know if it is good or not before you try.

After I had gone home to eat dinner and take a shower Nui and I went to Chaweng again. The other had entered a drag show club so we had no other choice than to join them, which actually was fun. The dancers were sparkling as the starts they pretended to be and as usual you could see how much they loved the spotlight. The performance were as mediocre as usual as well with dance moves slow and out of sync. This is just as it should be on a show like this and not least price tags on drinks that are the double from most other places.

I ended up being some kind of goof-toy which they used to make the show more fun. At one time I was being asked by the drag queen if I wanted her, of course I said no and she kept asking and I kept answering. After a few times I answered a few lines in Thai which for some reason made her day. We did not stay very long, after a few numbers on the stage it feels as if you have seen it already. As a tourist it is almost as a "must see" just for the sake of it and it is very innocent shows with glitter and glamour, or at least That's how they want it to be. We ended the night in a calm bar chatting and soon after midnight we went back home.

This weekend my cousin came to Samui and much time has been spent on taking them to some of my favorite places and the popular attractions. After checking out Lamai beach we took off to Thong Takian which is one of my favorite beaches just around the corner. After a few hours spent in the water we went to one of the waterfalls and continued to play in the water which is a lot more refreshing at this place. It is no question about that the high season is arriving, a lot more people everywhere than a few weeks ago.

Today my cousin and friends went to Thong Takian the first thing in the morning, they really liked that beach too. I went there a few hours later and I have already got a good vacation tan which was about time. I then took them for a meal at a local place where almost no tourists eat and they really liked the tasty noodle dish i suggested. When the hunger was not an issue we went to the northern side of Samui to check out the classic tourist attraction, Big Buddha. We also made a real buddhist ritual and got our future read. For my part the future seemed extremely bright but for some the message was very different which made them a little concerned not least since they are about to continue their travel for more than 4 month. I also took them to Wat Laem which is close by the Big Buddha and we had a pancake meal along with some other Thais, almost no tourists here and a lot more beautiful than the Big Buddha area. On the way back we stopped by at Choeng Mon for a short swim and then through Chaweng back to Lamai. It took a little longer than expected because of a flat tyre but with a lot of service places we got that fixed. 5 minutes and 150 bath later we headed back to Lamai.

It was a very nice day and it feels very nice to spend most of the days almost as if I was on a holiday.
