Last Week Of The Year

Christmas Tree on Samui

Then the christmas was over. Well, many people celebrate today and for those it is not really over yet. We had a cozy evening which we ended in front of the television and some movies. We have not seen that many movies lately and the ones that are available at the movie channel we have are often old and after seen them once they keep coming every day almost the same time for a month.

We saw Zombieland, and I must say that it was really amusing. A nice blend of comedy, splatter and.... that was it. I anyway thought it was pretty well done and even if many decisions made by the characters were stupid it was well worth the time watching it. After that one we jumped right into the next one which was 2012. A little slow started and in my opinion to much of top much. The people that the movie are about are about 2 seconds or 30 cm from death most of the time. A well done movie when it comes to the effects, today it is possible to do anything in a movie and it all looks very real.

In the afternoon today I went to arrange a room for my cousin who will be here in a few hours. Many of the places I asked were already fully booked but I managed to find a good place without to much of an effort. Now it is less than one week left if this year which has just flew by way to fast. Anyway this last week will probably be a little different and maybe I will also be able to have some beach time along with my cousin and maybe also get a tan.

The sun has kept shining and today it has been very hot. I think this year will have a great ending.

Christmas

Text by Olle - Living on Lamai Beach - Wednesday, December 23, 2009

Tomorrow is the day when I usually celebrate christmas. This year the day will be almost as an ordinary day. Maybe a tasty dinner or something like that. I have seen pictures revealing it is a lot of snow on many places in Europe and USA. Looks nice on picture I must say. It is not like christmas does not exist here. For weeks I have had my dose of christmas songs which are played in Tesco supermarket all day long poor staff, it must be annoying after a few minutes. Also some decorations and christmas trees are to be found a little here and there.

Yesterday I went with Nui to buy a stereo. I had almost decided to get the Sony and we went to the store. The guy who was about to let us listen one last time tried to connect a DVD player but first failed, he then turned the volume up and down back and forth and then had it at the MAX volume while fixing with cables and so. I told Nui that doing that is one of the big No No's, it just forbidden to do that, I told him that he better turn it down but he was to caught up in the cables and his friends made the impression that we came in a bad time. They were playing Playstation on a big screen TV as the other days I have been there. Suddenly a pop-sound and then an extremely low hi pass sound from one of the speakers and there he blew the equipment without noticing it. He kept fixing but the sound never got better and after being told that the price was the double from what he by mistake told me the day before I asked him very polite if we could check out their Yamaha system instead. Unfortunately they never got the system to work either but got stuck on getting the receiver on so after a few minutes we took off. Having the systems connected ready for show is not of importance in this store. When we then went to Big C to pick up that low price system I checked out earlier. The guy I had been talking to before was not there and according to this guy they only had the system that was in the store which also had a broken front. We also located a few other stores, one with Denon and JBL stuff which is good but they only had systems with small front speakers which does not work good for music. We ended up going home empty handed but it actually felt right. Instead we will take a look in Bangkok next month.

Tomorrow I will go to Maenam and see if the service center got the break pads they ordered. The breaks do work now as well but it sounds very bad if breaking hard. We also got the information that the Hitachi guy that should bring our refrigerator door forgot it so we will have to wait another month. That does not matter, since it works fine it is only a matter of looks and I am happy they will fix it without any trouble.

Have a nice christmas those of you who celebrate tomorrow.

Testing Speakers

This weekend has been a lazy one, much thanks to a somewhat bad weather. At Saturday it was raining on and off most of the day so we did not go anywhere but stayed home. On Sunday morning we woke up at 7 o'clock with our hearts pumping, looked at each other and realized it must have been the thunder who woke us up. Only a few seconds later an enormous loud second bang made the house shaking for real and the alarms on cars outside on the streets started to sound. Heavy rain begun to fall and a few more big bangs was fired off before it passed by and the thunder was only mumbling from far away. We fell asleep again and woke up really late. The weather was better, at least it was not raining so we went for another mountain trip. As you understand there are so many roads up in these mountains that you can spend quite a few days exploring them. This trip was only for fun, finding land and build a house in these areas are not what we want.

We took off and went all the way up to a place called Raan Khao Nui, which means the little mountain restaurant. I do not believe they have many visitors since it is faaar up in the mountains and the roads are extremely bad. Its is set at more than 500 meters altitude and our bike was gouging blood from the effort to bring us up there. The place does not look like a restaurant but only like a normal house which it also is. We said hello to some kids and to two ladies who sat outside. We kept going a little further just to get a clean view over the Lamai area.

We had only started to descent on the steep roads when a harsh noise started to sound from the front tire. What a great timing, the front break was completely worn out and it now sounded as if two rocks was being pressed against metal. It took a while to get down from the worst parts and then we rolled down using only the back break. All the down hills made the mind confused and when we thought we were on flat land we kept rolling in good speed.

Today I went to Maenam to get new break pads, unfortunately they were out of stock and I will have to go back in three days. Instead I went looking for speakers, and I had already prepared a CD so I could listen to the same music in all stores. First I went to Big C only since I was amazed of the sound from a pair of very cheap speakers at this store before. However with my music I found the sound to be less good. He then recommended me to listen to another system and this one, with the name Fantasia was really amazing. Well for the money. It cost only 9 000 bath for a complete 5:1 home theater system and with no doubt it beats the crap out of many systems that costs far more. The system did not have any separate sub woofer but still OK. It had good quality in both bass, mid and treble and with real good power.

I then went to another store and listened to a Yamaha system for about 50 000 bath, it sounded OK with the sub. It is hard to compare since this system also was set up on a bigger space with the speakers further away from each other making the stereo width more clear.

The third system that I liked was a Sony for almost half the price of the Yamaha system, also with good sound. I only listened without the woofer and it sounded really good far better than the Yamaha system without sub woofer. So now I am confused and do not know what to buy. I admit that the no name system in Big C is less interesting just from the name, but I actually went back a second time just to make sure and it blew me away, 9 000 and this sound, crazy.

I probably go with the Sony, but before that I will go back and listen to another set of music which is more revealing than the club music I had today. It is almost as if I want the cheap system to sound bad just because I think it should do for that money, ha ha.

At last a short update about the road works. The road works was going on at the northern side as well which means that they will be ready much faster than I expected. From Maenam to Chaweng the road was almost finished and how far on the north-west side they have made already I do not know.
