Guessing Age and Friday 13!

Text by Olle - Living on Lamai Beach - Friday, November 13, 2009

Both Nui and I always gets mistaken for being younger than we are, a lot younger. Even if it happens almost on a daily basis today a girl who was 25 spoke to Nui using the word "nong" that you do when you speak to younger persons then yourself, Nui first did not react because the girl looked old but then Nui asked her how old she was and she got so chocked when she heard that she was 25. The girl did not ask Nui and Nui did not say anything. The fact is that she is more than 7 years older than this girl, funny.

Today we planned on going to take a look at that land that I saw yesterday. The plan was to wake up early and go in the morning, that plan failed, brutally. We woke up way to late so we said that we should go in the afternoon instead, however that plan failed as well. Nui got back home just before dusk and we felt that it would just be a rush to get there before it got completely dark. Maybe we have better luck with our plans tomorrow.

Today it was Friday the 13th something that did not come with any bad luck at all for our sake, well except our planning then, but I do not blame the date for that.

I have heard that there is a lot of buzzing about the swine flu in Europe, but here we do not hear anything at all. I wonder if it is so much worth in Europe or if its just the news that brings it all to heat. I do not know but the regular flu that comes every year do kill people as well, right. But maybe this really is something else. I also saw an interview with a nun with the Teresa Forcades which was interesting, that I found at YouTube. Since it is very quiet about it over here I guess, and hope that it is not as big here and that it will not be. But with the amount of tourist visiting Thailand it would not be strange if more of that flu came here.

Since it is Friday and we have to pretend that every day is not the same we have our special snacks day today when we eat snacks and drink some soda which we otherwise never do, not even every Friday. Fridays are magic, probably because we are so used to the weekends where I come from and I guess most other people too. When things are running smoother in the future maybe weekends again will equal holiday.

As always, have a nice weekend. I am sure that I will.

Good monkey, do not bite me

Samui Monkey

I have been looking at a new land today. I went in the afternoon with our neighbor who know the owner. In the morning I did the ritual things, buy water and ice for Nui and then sat by the damn computer. Right now I am very tired of computers, I have to spend far too much time in front of the computer and so it has been for half a year now, every day. The weather today has been great just as yesterday.

Just after 3 o'clock in the afternoon our neighbor came and asked if I wanted to look at a friends land and of course I did. On the way there I got some nice information about the roadwork. The complete ring road will get asphalt and Lamai is first on the list. They have already started and the second we drove up on the new road it went so perfectly quiet, wow. I had forgotten how silent it is to drive on asphalt, the concrete roads are so hard and bumpy and the noise it make is very louder than I realized before. Since the asphalt is so much softer I am sure it will not need the same maintenance as the concrete roads and in this way it might be cheaper in the long run, something I have been thinking about for a long time.

This land was a little further away than I had expected but I was set in a very quiet area with forests all around and a small river outlining the land area. There were also some young rubber tree plantations around which is good since those places will not be built on for many, many years. At the moment they use the land as a collection area for coconuts and they had a bunch of monkeys running around on the yard some of them not very polite. One of the workers had to walk along with us to make sure they did not attack, never encountered that before. The most angry one was in a chain, lucky for us.

I need to let Nui see the Land as well so probably we can take some minutes tomorrow. I am almost sure that she think it is to far away and I really want to check out the land here in Lamai again. In the evening I went to the gym, the first time in a long time that I felt that I had the time to really finish the workout as planned.

A Beautiful Day

Birds

Today the sun has been shining almost throughout the day, very energizing. As most days Nui went away with the sidecar while i stayed home working at the computer. After just after midday the two birds arrived again, shouting to me on the porch, when I finally understood their message, which took a while since I hear birds all day, they quickly fled the porch as I approached. I gave them some rice on the wall outside and went inside. The thing is that I have not really been sure that they are actually coming here getting my attention just to get food, but I have thought that it is almost like that. Today I am sure that this is the case. To many days it has been the same story. After I put the rice on the wall, why they sit a few meters away watching, they came jumping towards the food and dug into each of the small rice piles I put. It is really funny and I am also a little surprised that they can think like that even if I am well aware that birds are far from stupid. But we never gave them food the first time, they just found some and the next day they started to scream at us to hurry up with the food.

Even if I try not to write about animals they just keep ending up at my house and iI just have to write about it. For those of you who are aware of the 150 bath net fee that the Thai banks introduced some month ago I can tell you that Ayudhya, with the yellow ATM's, have dropped the fee to only 15 bath. I have not checked other banks yet but I guess I have to do that as well.

When Nui got back home we decided to go down to Thong Takian beach for a swim. When we got there the sun had left the beach that was almost completely empty. The water was higher that I have ever seen it, all the way up to the wall on the northern end where the beach before used to be well over 5 meters wide. The water was almost perfectly blank and we both have been thinking about taking a swim for quite a while. It is so different with the monsoon this year compared to two years ago when it literally was raining for two months on a row.

Now we will head out to eat some noodle soup, yesterday when we ran off to eat they had already closed the shop so I better run...

They Just Like Me

Dogs at SamuiMy Friend

Today again, two dogs came to visit me. New ones that I have never seen before. One of them came running just as if he knew were he was going, he ran up on the stairs to the porch and stood there, wagging his tail very fast. I got extremely surprised since dogs here are usually very shy. This guy acted as we already knew each other but anyway acted a little insecure. The other, older female, went away while I went outside to greet the young guy. After I had checked him out a little I gave him a bit of dog candy but he was not very interested in that but ate it anyway. I sat down outside and ate rice and tuna and of course he got interested but i told him that this was mine and he then stayed about a meter away, totally aware of that this food was mine while I ate. It is very convenient with animals who speak the same language all over the world. The friend came back and got a snack as well and after a few minute she want away again. When it was time for me to get back to the computer he laid down just outside the door. Unfortunately one of the neighbors scared him away when he was investigating some things on the veranda and he took off.

When Nui got home in the afternoon we went to Tesco to see if they got new chicken, yesterday they did not have any left. We found five fillets that were stuck to the frozen metal box they are placed in. We did not see these ones yesterday and I bet they have been there for some time, like leftovers they were put along with other meat. I managed to tear some meat off the metal, enough for a day. This Tesco really has some big issues compared to the other stores I been to. I think they do not order things before they are complete out of it which result in several days without the products, and I still cannot understand why they don not have plastic bag holders but put the bags in the bloody meat and every time one of the workers is handing a bag with chicken back to me after he weight it he put it in the pork blood which is in between him and me no matter if I reach to take it from their hands. I mean, not like it is a serious problem but I just cannot figure out why.

Today the weather has been very good, mostly sunny but with some clouds soaring in the sky. Now in the evening the TV signal stopped working again. Last time it disappeared for more than 24 hours and the company could not say why so this time they should send someone over to see if the installation of the cable might be the problem.

Another Monday

Roaster

It is just crazy how fast the weeks fly by. I almost feel that i write at Mondays every other day. Today the weather has been a little on and off. In the morning it looked very good but at mid day some dark clouds were occupying the sky. Not short after the sky got more blue again, so over all shifting weather.

The weekend flew by in fast forward as usual and the biggest new was that the bill from the veterinary came, my dog back in Sweden had to stay two days at a vet after having puked blood. That trip cost, if converted into bath, over 60 000 which was not that fun. I just cannot understand how two nights and some blood tests can cost that much. They thought is was some kind of virus so no medication could be used so I can only hope she will stay well now. It is not the best timing for unexpected expenses, I have had quite enough already.

Today when I was working to birds came screaming at me again, I though they wanted to have rice to eat so I threw some on the drive way. They did not care, the just sat the looking at it. After some minutes a roaster came by and dug in on the rice and when he was fed two small dogs also came and ate the rest. Nui later told me she already fed the two birds so maybe they were just polite and wanted to say thank you.

I think it is time to tell a TV story again since it has been a while. A guy from Isaan who was in the army saw an enormous Cobra fighting against a Python and after the Cobra won the fight and started to eat the Python he stepped in and killed the Cobra and took it home to eat. The following night he had a dream that the Cobras wife came to him and asked why he killed her husband. He was 68 years old and had only 2 more years before it was his time to die. The wife were very sad and told him that they were very special snakes and that she also had many eggs that soon would hatch. She told the guy to bring the remaining of her husband and also told him where she were at with precise guidelines about the surroundings. In the morning the young guy went to his superior and asked for advice since he got very scared after the dream. The superior said he had to do as the snake wife said and he also followed the guy to the place. Everything the snake told him in the dream was exactly the same in real life and they found the place very easy. He put what was left of the snake at the spot and prayed for forgiveness. And after that the snake never bothered him again.
