Som Tam Can Be Very Tasty
Text by Olle - Living on Lamai Beach - Friday, November 06, 2009
Today the weather was quiet OK again. Most of the day has been sunny but with clouds have been laying around as well. In the morning after I ate breakfast we went to Chaweng. Even if the weather was great the sea was rough with big waves rolling on to Chaweng Noi, that beach is very visible from the road. In Chaweng we bought a special tea that is very tasty. At the way back we crossed the intersection where we saw the young python snake yesterday. He had got completely run over and I hope it happened very soon after we left.
When we got back home I sat down to work while Nui fixed the tea and coffee that she usually does before heading out.
At the afternoon Anders dropped by, tennis was on the schedule. Yesterday we played a double game with two others and today it was rematch.
As the evening came closer the clouds got darker and darker and we thought that we might not be able to play at all but since it was not raining yet we started to play and we were very lucky. We were in the end of the game when tiny drops came falling down, but so few that we barely noticed them and it never got worse than that either which was kind of strange since the sky was pitch black. I still wonder if it will be any heavy monsoon at all this year and if so, if it will be delayed or just be very short. For my sake it can very well just be absent this year. If we are that lucky we will have to see.
In the evening we have only been staying home, except that Nui went to buy some Som Tam but she never bought any because there were so many people already waiting. We just decided that we will take a second run and see if they are still open. Why this sudden urge for Som Tam, we never been eating much of that before? Well well now I have to jump in into my flip flops and hurry up so they do not close before we get there.
Have a nice weekend.
Poor Snake

Today the monsoon was not as hard as yesterday, in the morning we had some thick clouds but they disappeared more and more as the day went on. We had to go to Chaweng to buy some tea as it was empty at home. Unfortunately it is very common that the stores are out of products as well, not only small stores but even the big malls and today was one of those days. They thought they might get it tomorrow so we will have to check back again. Now the lesson is learned and we will buy every pack they have tomorrow and start having a warehouse at home and buy more before it is completely empty.
At the way back home we saw a small python snake in an intersection. It had been run over at its rear end and it was throwing itself all over the road probably from pain but maybe also because he got scared from all the traffic around him. Since he was so badly hurt I did not stop to help him, but I hope he got run over completely very quick after. If he would have been ok I would not have hesitated to help him.
When we got back home I wanted to go check the lands again just to try to get a feeling about the different plots. For sure it is nice to live close to the sea but it is also nice to be right in Lamai. Before we had taken off a small female dog came to our house. She has been here before one time with a bigger dog. She is extremely scared but liked the bread I threw to her. Nui reminded me that we had some dog candy at home and that worked as a magic wand. After only seconds most fear was gone and she ate it right from my hand. When I decided she had had enough she stayed for quiet a while, just sitting on the porch. After a while she walked away to some friends that she heard barking.
Nui and I took off to the southern parts of the island and now the weather was great, but very strong winds were sweeping across the island making all the dust and sand that the rain transported on to the roads swirling all over. I believe we will not aim to buy the land from that man because he obviously put on his fantasy hat as many people do when it comes to land prices not least over the phone. No wonder that there are so much land for sale everywhere, the prices are often ridiculous. But since many of the land owner have so much land and already sold some they just do not care if the sell or not.
Monsoon Arrives
Text by Olle - Living on Lamai Beach - Wednesday, November 04, 2009

Tonight the rain has been falling for many hours. I woke up at several times in the morning but thought the time was only about 6 so I fell a sleep again. When I later looked at the clock it was 11:30 but still it was so dark it could had been 6 in the morning. It did not rain at this time but thick clouds filled the sky. We went to take a look at the land we have been checking out for the last half year and as we feared it was a lot of water on that land and almost as a little river floating straight through so that land is out the question.
While driving along the coast we saw the ocean crashing onto the beaches in a chaotic way, just as it use to do when the monsoon sets in. The beaches that usually are so calm and with strong colorful water was totally gone and the water was brownish and not attractive at all.
In the afternoon I felt that we just have to check for more lands and believe it or not, we found land in the two exact spots I told Nui I liked most. But the people we asked were living far from there so I got really exited when we followed the people and ended in those exact places. Now we have more thinking to do. Two prime locations according to me but very different from each other. On in Lamai, close to where live now but in the outskirts and with only palm trees around, a very quiet spot with possibilities to walk for many hours without seen people but still very close the main street in Lamai. The other option, almost beachfront is set less than 10 minutes from Lamai 100 meters from the beach. Almost no houses around and with the ocean view through the palm tree forest. We sure have a lot of thinking to do.
Today I got the news that my dog Nala in Sweden is ill. She had been coughing and puking blood and stayed the night at the veterinary where she will stay for one more night. They did not know what seem to be the problem but maybe a virus. I hope she gets better quick. Having a sick dog is not very fun for the dog but as well not for the wallet, most certainly not when the bill comes from Sweden. It easily gets up to a one month salary without any problem.
Mosquitoes
Text by Olle - Living on Lamai Beach - Tuesday, November 03, 2009
Today the weather has been a little more cold than usual and less sunny. In the morning it was a lot of clouds in the sky and it was almost as it would be a rainy day. I then noticed that the dark clouds were not coming in our direction but were passing by just up in the mountain west from us. At times we also had some sun and then in the evening it came a few drops, but nothing worth calling rain, not even a short shower. I guess it has been raining on other places on Samui today since the sky looked very dark over the mountain. We still wait for that November monsoon to hit hard but it is very, very slow.
I noticed that one of my bank card was missing from my wallet. A card I had not used in a long time so I do not really know when I lost it. I did not have a lot of money on that account so I am not scared for that reason, but it is annoying.
It is one of those card you cannot choose you code yourself but have to stick with a special one. Anyway I did cancel the card and they will send me a new one so no big deal really.
What is a big deal is that we have had more mosquitoes than before. We have not had any problems at all with mosquitoes and we have even had our windows open during day and nights but now suddenly we have had a few at night. I woke up tonight and the night before as well because it was itching like crazy on several places. Tonight we will do a mosquito check before bedtime to get rid of those suckers.
Now it is time to see if the TV is working, it has been blue screen for the last three hours, not very uncommon that some channels are like that but now all channels are out of order. Even if I rarely watch anything important it is just the habit of having something on. I habit that might not be very good. Nui just came home from Tesco where she bought some food and fruits so i really hope we can see a movie and eat something tasty.
A Special Day
Text by Olle - Living on Lamai Beach - Monday, November 02, 2009

Today is a special day in thailand, it is the Loy kratong. Very short and simple one can say that it is a day when people say farewell to the bad luck with prayers to the god of water to get good luck during the next year.
We started the day with the usual porridge while doing some work at the computer. Nui went to buy some food and when she returned we ate Som Tam and noodles. We have not been eating Som Tam for very long time except Nui who tasted from a friend a while ago. This one was really good and it was no "pla la" something that is very common in the Isaan region. I have never tasted it and Nui have tasted it only a few times but really don not like it. So this was the kind with out pla la but with nuts and other tasty things.
We decided to take the day off and I shut down the computer and we took off to Big Buddha and Wat Leam in the northern side. The weather was great and we stopped by the road in Chaweng and bought some fried chicken and sticky rice and continued on. It came to my mind that it was time to change the oil in the motorbike and that I always do in a special shop in Bophut because they check everything thoroughly and always end the service with a good cleaning.
While we waited I got three new friends, fury ones. Three dogs who wanted to taste my chicken, and of course they got a little as well. The sticky rice they thought I could have for myself.
When the bike had been served and it was shiny and nice we went to Big Buddha and Wat Leam just to relax. I ate some more chicken and got a few more fury friends, but I like friends, fury or no fury. It felt great to get out of the house for more than one hour that I use to spend in the gym. We headed back home just before dawn and then spent the evening on the crowded Lamai beach where they had shows and some Thai boxing fights. People were sending up lucky balloons and enjoying the great evening. The small lake in Lamai just at the beach were filled with Kratong's and the beach were filled with garbage. When people here drink beer from a bottle it gets extremely slippery or something as soon as it is empty and it just slips out of the grip, into the sand. I actually did not notice that at all first but Nui looked around and asked a rhetorical question why people cannot clean up after themselves.
We had a great day, a little holiday. Just what we needed. So small things that can make so much joy.
