Koh Samui Beaches

Chaweng Beach

The most popular beach on Koh Samui is called Had Chaweng and it is located on the island's east coast. On the six kilometer long beach, you'll find many hotels and cozy resorts. Chaweng Beach Road is perfect for those who appreciate affordable shopping, intense nightlife and fine dining alternatives.

Even a spectacular golf course (Santiburi Golf) and the islands' airport are in relatively close distance from Chaweng. You will find many dive schools here as well as thai boxing, internet cafes, tailors and many restaurants that serves Thai food and cuisine from the whole world.

If you enjoy beach activities, there is no problem to engage in jet ski riding, banana boat riding, water skiing, wakeboarding, windsurfing or parasailing (after a motorboat which involves a ride high above the water and a fantastic view overlooking Chaweng). It is also possible to rent a kayak or a canoe.

Or why not just enjoying the sun and a refreshing drink. The most popular beach bar in Chaweng is probably Ark Bar, situated in the center of the beach.

Lamai Beach

The second most popular beach on Samui is called Had Lamai and is located south of Chaweng on the east coast of Koh Samui. The beach is beautiful, especially the southern parts. The number of tourists is noticeable less here than in Chaweng but you'll find a couple of smaller clubs and many small bars and pubs.

Lamai beach also offers a variety of water sports including jet ski, water skiing, wakeboarding, windsurfing, parasailing and you are also able to rent a motorboat for a private tour.

Bo Phut Beach

Bo Phut beach is about three kilometers long and has a relatively fine-grained sand and coconut palm trees at it's side. Here you'll get a superb view overlooking Koh Phangan and the Gulf of Thailand.

Before the tourists began to discover Koh Samui, Bo Phut was a small fishing village and still there are some fishermen with their characteristic boats active here. But nowadays, there are not only fishing boats departing from Bo Phut. Also smaller ferries and speedboats are transporting divers and the tourists, who are going on various tours around the island.

Bo Phut is also located near the island's airport and very close to one of the islands' larger piers, from where ferries depart regularly to Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. In the evening, when it's time for dinner, Bo Phut have many cozy restaurants to choose from. Here you are able to order fresh seafood, fresh fish, traditional Thai dishes or why not a juicy steak if you are more into "western cuisine".

It is possible to rent jet skis, snorkeling gear, kayaks and other water activity gear here as well. If you're more into the art of serious relaxation, you might just lie down and bask in the sun on the beach. Refresh yourself by ordering a drink or fruit juice from one of the restaurants or resorts along the beach.

Maenam Beach

Maenam, or Mae Nam (an alternate spelling) is located in northern coastline of Koh Samui, west of Bo Phut. The beach is about five kilometers long and is a rather popular location for surfers. Here you're able to rent a surfboard in some of the hotels. When tourists initially began to explore Koh Samui, Maenam was one of the few beaches that could offer hotels by the sea. That was a long time ago.

This beach is an excellent holiday destination if you are traveling with children or if you just want to just relax, without interference from loud music from bars, etc. In some parts of the beach, it gets rather deep quickly, so if you have children, do not to lose sight of them.

Maenam is situated close to Samui's finest golf course; Santiburi Golf and Country Club and nearby the Maenam Pier with ferries to Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. The island's airport, Samui Airport, is also located a relatively short taxi ride from this beach.

Beaches in the South

In the southern part of Koh Samui, you'll find beaches such as; Thong Krut, Bang Kao and Hua Thanon. These three beaches are also well worth a visit. If you do not live at any of these three beaches, we recommend a day trip there and take this opportunity to visit a waterfall, tiger zoo, the Samui Aquarium, monkey show, or temple, etc. on the way. You will find all these attractions in the southern parts of the island. Further information is found here.

Beaches in the West

On the western side of Samui, you'll find Taling Ngam. This beach is clearly worth a visit because the sunset view from here is really magnificent.

Lipa Noi and Bang Por are two other nice beaches in the northwest part of Samui. These beaches are not crowded at all (especially not in low season), which means that they have retained the charm and paradise feeling, which many aspire. Both are excellent destinations for day trips, family picnic or sunset dining.

Lipa Noi is shallow which makes it suitable for children and families. A marina is planned in the area, but nothing seems definite at the time of writing. The famous "jet set resort", Nikki Beach is located in Lipa Noi.
